We boarded the train back to Sydney and found our friend Gayle in Neutral Bay. Gayle is a Vancouver teacher starting her exchange in Sydney. She had just arrived that morning and we had plans to stay with her for 2 nights.
On NYE, we had dinner at a restaurant called the Oaks, then walked to a viewing area to see the 9pm fireworks. After that, we went back to her apartment for some wine and to try to stay awake till midnight for the big show. Gayle fell asleep just 20 min short of midnight while Leon and I watched the fireworks on his computer. We could certainly hear the fireworks! I fell asleep shortly after that listening to the neighbours sing karaoke.
The next day we met with Helen Gregory, the coordinator for exchanges to NSW. First we took Gayle on the ferry to Circular Quay to walk around the Sydney Opera House, then we boarded another ferry to Watson’s Bay where we finally stopped for tea. From there we boarded a bus to Bondi Beach to meet Helen and several members of her family. We sat on the grassy area behind the beach, sipping champagne and enjoying a few nibbles. The beach was super crowded but it was amazing to be there for New Year’s Day.
We thought of having our own polar bear swim, but we settled on a picture with Bondi in the background.
What a great way to end 2017 & begin 2018!

I am happy to have been in Sydney to celebrate. NYE is one of 2 big events in Australia. The other is Anzac Day.
